Electric car market gaining momentum in Asia

Urban transportation systems in Asia have undergone both a huge expansion and a rapid transformation in recent years. One of the key missions of such development is to combat roadside air pollution which poses a threat to citizens’ health. Stricter environmental regulations and related policy initiatives have become a significant driving force in the Asian electric vehicles’ (EVs) market.

According to a research conducted by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, it is forecasted that during the 2020s, EVs will become a more viable economic option than gasoline or diesel cars in most countries. By 2040, EVs will constitute 35% of global new car sales.

The “13th FYP - National Science and Technology Innovation Plan” issued in July 2016 reveals the importance of new energy vehicle development in Chinese mainland. The country is determined to establish itself as the world’s leader in manufacturing electric cars.

Hong Kong has made significant progress when it comes to preparing wider adoption of EVs. At the end of 2016, there were 7,231 EV units on Hong Kong roads, which is 44% more than that in London.
