Sharing from Dr M. Hank Haeusler

“Convergence (referring to evolutionary computing in this text) has been a topic of discussion in digital architecture for quite some time and I think it is absolutely relevant to engage further with this topic. Convergence relates to artificial intelligence and second machine age general purpose technologies such as IoT, big data, increased computing power, digitalised information to name a few. The lighting industry is gradually moving away from producing ‘only lights’ to seeing LEDs, sensors and wireless data transmission using light beacon as part of network to enable smart and ubiquitous cities. I am confident that a full transition into serving the needs of a digital age is not a challenge for the lighting industry from a technical point but it will be from a social and cultural point. In the past, consumer requirements were clearly defined (light to illuminate space which is a globally equal demand). However the current requirements for smart and ubiquitous cities are more complex and the universal need to illumination does not equal to universal solutions for smart cities. Here each location needs a customised response to its unique challenges and context.”
